#PowersForThePeople: It’s been a busy week

Pamela Powers Hannley

What a hectic and exciting week it has been. Jim and I attended seven events– culminating with the Arizona Democratic Party’s State Committee Meeting and the Arizona Democratic Progressive Caucus Meeting in Kingman on Saturday, January 23. Here is a collage of photos from this week. (For more photos along the campaign trail, check out the photo albums on my Facebook page.)

Sunday morning (January 17), there was Rep. Randy Friese’s kick-off party in midtown. Here I am with friends Joel Feinman, who is running for Pima County attorney, and envronmental activist and PDA Tucson Steering Committee Member Dr. Barbara Warren.

Another photo from Randy’s party with Congressman Ron Barber, LD10 candidate Courtney Frogge, and Pima Dems Chair Dr. Jo Holt.

Sunday evening we all reconvened at Tohono Chul Park for the wedding of two PDA Tucson activists Michael Gordy and Bridget Stoll. It was lovely (although a bit chilly later).

I had the perfect seat for photos.

Jim and I marched in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day March. This is the Jobs with Justice booth.

These are our Unitarian Universalist Standing on the Side of Love t-shirts. Easy to spot in a crowd.

This photo represents the first event (the LD9 PC vote on Friday January 15 when I received 78% of the PC votes) and the following Tuesday when the Pima County Board of Supervisors appointed Ward 3 City Council Aide Matt Kopec (left) to Victoria Steele’s seat. Also ran is Ward 2 City Council Aide Ted Prezelski. On the upside, I have had my best fundraising week ever since the appointment. Woot! (You can join the fun by clicking the donate button on my home page.)

On Wednesday, I spoke at the Call to Audience in favor of earned sick leave. You can go to this link on the City’s website to hear the call to audience and more. I’m at about 30 minute mark, after Jobs with Justice Chair Steve Valencia, Pima Area Labor Federation (PALF) Chair Fred Yamashita and others.

Over the weekend, we were in Kingman, Arizona for the Arizona Democratic Party’s State Committee Meeting and the Arizona Democratic Progressive Caucus Meeting. It was a rousing day of political discourse. Here Dan O’Neal of PDA Arizona talks about the gargantuan effort that Bernie phone banking volunteers are doing– 13,000 calls in recent weeks. (I was trying hard not to make weird faces because we were filming and many people were taking photos. I was obviously unsuccessful.) Scott Prior (left) of Apache Junction and I have been co-chairing the ADP’s Progressive Caucus since January 2014. The Arizona Democratic Progressive Caucus is the largest caucus in the ADP. Saturday’s meeting was standing room only.
Morgan Abraham
There was a 20-minute debate about Prop 123, the Governor’s plan to take risky amounts of money from the Land Trust to partially pay back public education. Here Morgan Abraham speaks against Prop 123. The caucus and the whole State Committee voted on a resolution against Prop 123, which failed, although it appeared as if most of the Progressive Caucus members oppose Prop 123 and are disgusted by the dangerous funding tricks and triggers it contains.
Mikel Weisser
Photobombing CD4 Congressional candidate Mikel Weisser, who is also the statewide director for NORML. Weisser ran against Congressman Paul Gosar in 2012 and will take another run at it.

We had fun in Kingman, talked with many friends, debated issues, and ate a lot of good food. Here I am at Mr. D’z (for the actor Andy Devine, who grew up in Kingman). Mr. D’z (veggie sandwich with sweet potato fries), Lin’s Little China (great chicken curry), and the Route 66 Cafe attached to the Ramada (yummy shrimp bruschetta)– all good.

Today, Monday, January 25, I will be tabling at the Martha Cooper Library in midtown from 2-4 p.m. Stop by and say “hi”. The Pima Dems will be there with voter registration forms. I will be tabling on several days in the coming weeks. Check my schedule here.
